  14. <p>    DIED. Josef Warkany, 90, pediatrician whose discoveries
  15. saved many young lives; in Clifton, Ohio. In 1940 he
  16. demonstrated that dietary deficiencies in mothers during
  17. pregnancy could cause birth defects. He also found that "pink
  18. disease," which killed or injured thousands of children until
  19. mid-century, was caused by mercury poisoning from teething
  20. powders and ointments.
